Liverpool Sign Wirtz Shattering Club Record Transfer Transfer fees | Football news

Liverpool published a huge declaration of intent after winning the title of the Premier League by signing the German star Florian Wirtz by Bayer Leverkusen.

Transfer costs could increase to 116 million pounds ($ 156 million), which would make Wirtz the 22 -year -old player in the history of British football.

“I feel very happy and very proud,” Wirtz told the official Liverpool website on Friday. “Finally, it’s done, and I was waiting for a long time.

“I am really excited to have a new adventure in front of me. It was also a big point of my thoughts: that I want to have something completely new, get out of the Bundesliga and join the Premier League.

“I’m going to see how I can play it there. I hope I can do my best. I also talked to some players who played it, and they told me it was perfect for me and that each field is perfect, you can enjoy each game. I’m really looking forward to playing my first game.”

Liverpool, determined to continue to move forward despite security A 20th English high flight titleescaped a club record to bring not only one of the best players in Germany, but one of the best young people in the world.

Wirtz has been a first key team for Leverkusen since the age of 17. He was the exceptional attacking player of the team who won the Bundesliga and the German Cup in 2023-24 without losing a match and is a regular at the German national team.

This is why Liverpool was ready to pay 100 million pounds guaranteed ($ 134.4 million), plus 16 million pounds ($ 21.5 million) in potential modules. Wirtz got two years on his contract, giving a Leverkusen lever effect in negotiations.

The Premier League record for initial fees was set when Chelsea signed Enzo Fernandez de Benfica for 106.7 million pounds ($ 131.4 million at the time) in 2023, before the London club agreed to pay up to 115 million pounds (146 million dollars at the time) for the midst of Bright

Liverpool manager, Arne Slot arrived last summer and signed only one outside player – striker Federico Chiesa – for the 2024-25 season.

Chiesa was barely played and the Reds won the 10 -point league, after which slot and some of his players – including Virgil Van Dijk – said there were big plans for this transfer window.

Having already signed Jeremie Frimpong to the right of Leverkusen for 35 to 40 million euros ($ 39.7 million at $ 45.4 million), Liverpool returned to the German club to take Wirtz, which rejected the opportunity to join Bayern Munich – a Bundesliga rival which continued it.

An obstacle to this move was the size of pricing that Leverkusen sought. Another was worrying about how Wirtz could integrate into the same programming as Jamal Musiala, the other young midfielder attacking Germany.

The loss of Wirtz leaves Leverkusen and his new coach, Erik Ten Hag with an even larger reconstruction after the departure of Xabi Alonso for Real Madrid.

Just after his 17th anniversary, Wirtz became the youngest player in the history of Leverkusen when he made his debut against Werder Bremen in May 2020, in an empty stadium at the height of the Pandemic Covid-19.

A month later, he was the youngest player to score in the history of Bundesliga, although this record has since been overthrown.

Wirtz’s versatile midfielder game was a vital ingredient in Alonso transforming Leverkusen into a team that could win the Bundesliga and the German cup without losing a match.

He and Alonso stayed for another season sometimes dispassioning, which ended with second place in Bayern in the league and a defeat against Bayern in the Champions League.

Wirtz has shown that he could face adversity when a tear of the crossed ligament in his knee excluded him for almost all 2022, including the first matches of Alonso as a coach, before returning to Power Leverkusen to his double in the League and the Cup in 2023-24.

Wirtz has become a vital player for the German national team with 29 caps. He played his five games at Euro 2024 on home at home.

He also had to face the hostility of fans of his childhood club Cologne, whom he left for Leverkusen nearby at 16. Liverpool and Bayern have also been interested.

Cologne said that the agreement had interrupted an agreement between the clubs so as not to continue the young players of the other. Leverkusen argued that Wirtz was so talented that he had as a first team player despite his age.

Cologne and Leverkusen are barely 10 kilometers (six miles), so going to Liverpool will be the first time that Wirtz moves away from its roots.

His parents, Hans Wirtz and Karin Gross, played a big role in his career – they were also his agents until last year – and he is close to his older sister Juliane, a professional player from Werder Bremen in the female Bundesliga.

Wirtz’s decision to refuse Bayern and Bundesliga for Liverpool raised eyebrows in Germany.

“I would not have thought that Florian would make this change so early,” said the former Grand Lothar Matthaus, the N-TV broadcaster last month. “But he wants to get out of his comfort zone.”

Wirtz seems likely to compete as No. 10 in Liverpool, a more creative solution in this role in relation to the Dominik Szoboszlai hard.

It remains to be seen if the location niche also puts pressure for a new attacker as upgrade of current options that Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez.

Szoboszlai could return to one of the two deeper midfielders, competition with Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister and Curtis Jones.
