Luke Humphries celebrated a sensational victory in the US BET365 US Darts Masters with an 8-6 defeat from Nathan Aspinall, claiming the title in front of a North American record in New York on Saturday evening.
The world n ° 1 has tasted glory on the World Series of Darts of the PDC circuit for the second time with the triumph, sinking kneeling after hitting the double winner in front of 4000 fans at the Madison Square Garden theater.
The success of Humphries follows victories in the World Masters and the Premier League this year, when he continued his form in large stage with another impressive title.
He challenged a generally determined response from Aspinall to prevail in the decision maker, the 2019 American Masters’ Masters Champion Stronging 3-0 at five with a 90 to 90 finish on the Bullseye.
Humphries, however, showed his class with a 142 box to answer in style, and he held his nerve before landing the double eight to seal a memorable triumph.
“It is the most emblematic place in which we play and it is really special to win this event,” said Humphries.
“It is one of the best sites in the world and it is the one I have always dreamed of winning. When I finally won it tonight, it was incredible relief.
“Once I knew I was in a winning position, I started to become nervous – I’m really delighted to win and I’m on the moon. This is another massive event for me.
“I have won world championships, world matches, Prime Minister’s leagues and these great titles and if I felt like I had won another major.
“It is how great it’s – it’s very special and you could see my relief at the end. It was that of the World Series that I really wanted to win.
“The crowd was absolutely incredible this week, and having my mother and my father here to see me to win means the world for all of us.”
Humphries added: “Nathan is such a credit for sport and you can see it with the amount of the support he has obtained from the crowd.
“Nathan is so grainy and determined – he came back to me and made me difficult, but he missed two darts to go seven years and gave me a chance.
“It’s nice to see him again play as he can – he makes me want to be better and we always seem to have very good games.”
Humphries followed the defeat of the first round on Friday against Stowe Buntz by ending American hopes in New York with a 6-2-quarter-final victory against Danny Lauby.
He then won five straight legs to clear two to win his semi-final with Gerwyn Price 7-2.
Aspinall had overcome the Canadian Matt Campbell the best classified in the first round on Friday, and continued his superb form to win the victory in the highest quality quarter -final against Luke Littleler.
The world champion has an average of 109 in a 6-4 defeat, while Aspinall has an average of 106 to reserve his place in the semi-finals, where he challenged a 170 Caisse from Damon Heta to win a 7-3 victory.
“I had a fantastic weekend and I think it’s one of the best tournaments I have played for a long time,” said Aspinall.
“I played very well in the final and Luke saved his best performance for the last game; This is why he is the world number one and the best player in the world.
“I pushed it all along but it was a big tournament for me. The crowd was again incredible.”
Earlier, Price won the winner of 6-3 by twice the winner of the Darts of the United States, Michael Van Gerwen, in their quarter-final, while Heta bleached the American qualification Jason Brandon-who had eliminated Rob Cross 24 hours earlier.
The World Series of Darts of the PDC are continuing next weekend with the superb Poland Darts Masters in Gliwice, where a field of 16 players will compete on July 4-5.
