While Luke Little’s favorite D10 clashed in the board for an epic victory of 13-11 on Jermaine Wattimena during the match match, he let out a roar and pointed out the star of his shirt. It was a reminder that he is “world champion for a reason”.
Littleler added this star in January when he beat Michael Van Gerwen on the biggest scene of all to Alexandra Palace, cementing the youngest world champion in history and continuing his ascent.
Now he focuses on joining the exclusive club of “triple crown” winners who won the world, the Premier League and the World Match.
Phil Taylor, Van Gerwen, Gary Anderson and Luke Humphries have this victory at Blackpool – with an electrifying return victory in the second round and a quarter -final pending, Littleler is three victories to add to this list.
When he had 7-2 in Wattimena, it seemed that the Dutchman was about to produce the performance of his life to finally obtain a victory against the teenager. Littler said “not so fast”.
After “ The Nuke ” won six legs in a row and moved 8-7 ahead, he held his nerve and entered the equality break with the crowd of winter gardens on the side, holding his throwing then breaking Wattimena in the decisive moment to keep the dream alive.
To Littleler, his celebration recalled that he is the best in the world “for a reason” and can therefore withdraw a fight like this from the bag.
He was also a lifter with the 18-year-old, admitting that he had not felt such intense pressure since he faced Ryan Joyce to the Worlds in December, Littler surviving a fear for a 4-3 victory during the first round of the tournament he made glory.
“I am a world champion for a reason, I find these gears when I need it,” he said Sky Sports.
“I haven’t felt pressure like this since the first round of the world championships.
“I was a little nervous but the crowd was incredible and it was on my third match here and I won two.
“I want to come back to the stage and right now I can’t wait to be in the quarterfinals.
“If I was not going to 7-3, it would have been much more difficult. But yes, to go 7-3, I just told myself that you have to win at least the next two or three legs when you return,” he added.
“He simply said to me, saying to the fans, I am world champion for a reason, we come back. And for me, I always find these gears somewhere.
“Obviously, for me, I prefer to be taken off in my head as I did against Ryan Searle, but that was not the case and I removed it from the bag.
“Probably since the game Ryan Joyce, I have not left so much emotion of me since. But it’s just good for me to show emotion and show that I can always find a way to come back.”
The next step for Littleler in the quarterfinals is Andrew Gilding who came with a 11-5 barnstorming victory against Dirk Van Duijvenbode with an average of 100 brilliant.
“ The Nuke ” knows that ‘Goldfinger’ will not be an easy task and it will have to be ready for another difficult game in Blackpool, especially with their different styles.
“Yes, certainly, will certainly be a challenge. Obviously, the rhythm is not there for me,” said Littleler.
“As I did when I faced it in my first worlds, just find a kind of routine in which you can enter. I’m sure it will be a good game.”
Jean de Sky Sports, part of Luke Little’s victory …
“The only thing was that there were a number of legs between Jermaine Wattimena and victory when Luke Little was at his point.
“It has existed for a long time, he knows that he can get his legs … He knows who he is and there is confidence.
“He said there in the interview that it was the second more nervous that he ever felt. This is a whole thing.
“The dreams of taking this title are still there.”
