Microsoft blocks Google Chrome via its family safety functionality

Earlier this month, Microsoft’s family safety function, mainly used by parents and schools as a set of controls and parental filters, started to randomly block the Google Chrome browser when opening Windows. Microsoft has introduced a bug into family safety which specifically targets the Chrome browser and prevents it from working on Windows. “Our team investigated these reports and determined the cause of this behavior”, ” said Chrome Support Manager Ellen T. “For some users, Chrome is not able to execute when Microsoft Family Safety is activated.”

Other browsers like Firefox or Opera do not seem to be affected, and Some users even found that rename the chrome.exe to chrome1.exe works around this problem. Schools or parents that have enabled family security as part of a Microsoft 365 subscription can also deactivate the “inappropriate websites” for family security to get Operational Chrome, but this leaves children to access any website.

It is not known when Microsoft will solve the problem, which has been underway for more than two weeks. We contacted Microsoft to comment on this problem earlier this week, but at the time of publication, the company did not respond.

“We have heard nothing of Microsoft about a fixture in the process of being deployed,” wrote a chrome engineer in a Bogs monitoring threads June 10. “They provided advice to users who contact them on how to operate Chrome, but I don’t think it would have an important effect.”
