Western brands have been affected by boycotts and other forms of protests in the Muslim majority countries due to the Gaza War.
Police have arrested nearly 200 people in Pakistan in recent weeks after more than 10 group attacks against the taking of the fast-based fast food chain, triggered by anti-American feeling, unconditional support from the United States for the Washington ally and opposition to opposition to the Washington ally and opposition to opposition in the United States The War of Israel in Gazasay those responsible.
The fast food chain has become the target of protests and boycott calls by Islamist parties since the start of the war in Gaza as they connect the brand to American support for Israel.
At least 178 people were arrested, officials said this week.
Police in the major cities of Pakistan – including the southern port city of Karachi, the eastern city of Lahore and the capital, Islamabad – confirmed at least 11 incidents in which KFC chicken restaurants were attacked by demonstrators armed with sticks and vandalized.
A police official, who spoke under the guise of anonymity, said that an employee of the KFC had been shot this week in a store on the outskirts of Lahore by unknown armed men. The manager added that there was no protest at the time and that the police were investigating to find out if the murder was politically motivated or for another reason.
In Lahore, the police said that they accelerated security at 27 KFC outlets after two attacks had taken place and that five had been prevented.
“We are investigating the role of various individuals and groups in these attacks,” a Lahore police officer at the Reuters news agency told Faisal Kamran, adding that 11 people, including a member of the Islamist party Tehreek-E-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), were arrested in the city. He added that the demonstrations were not officially organized by the TLP.
TLP spokesperson Rehan Mohin Khan said the group “urged Muslims to boycott Israeli products, but that he has given no call to protest outside KFC”.
“If another person claiming to be a TLP chief or a activist has engaged in such an activity, she should be considered her personal act which has nothing to do with party policy,” said Khan.
Western brands have been struck by boycotts and other forms of demonstrations in Pakistan, other Muslim majority countries and several Western countries on the military offensive of Israel in the Gaza Strip.
In February of last year, McDonald’s cited boycott campaigns in the Middle East, Indonesia and Malaysia for sales, increasing by 0.7% during the fourth quarter of 2023, against 16.5% in the same quarter of the previous year.
Unilever – Who produces Dove Soap, Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream and Knorr Stock Cubes – also said that sales in Indonesia in the same quarter had a two -digit drop following “geopolitical campaigns oriented towards consumers”.
A KFC restaurant in the region administered by Pakistan in cashmere was also burnt down in March from last year while demonstrators chanted the “free Palestine”.
More than 51,900 people were killed in Gaza during the War of Israel, which started 18 months ago.
At least 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the attacks led by Hamas on October 7, 2023 and more than 200 were taken in captivity.
KFC and his parent company Yum Brands have not yet responded to the news of arrests in Pakistan.
