The official candidate and mayor Brad Lander is handcuffed by masked American federal agents.
New York controller Brad Lander was arrested by federal agents before an immigration court, while the administration of US President Donald Trump intensifies his approach to confrontation with local officials during immigration raids.
Lander, central candidate for the city’s primary democratic elections For the mayor, Tuesday escorted an accused of access to the Court as part of an effort to observe immigration hearings and promote legal services for immigrants when he was arrested by the United States for immigration and customs application (ICE).
“While escorting a defendant outside the immigration court at 26 Federal Plaza, Brad was taken by masked agents and owned by ice”, reads an article on the social media account of Lander who says that he was written by his wife.
Arrest is the last case of the Trump administration adopting a severe position towards Democratic officials who criticize his aggressive approach to immigration application. Federal immigration agencies have intensified apprehensions before the immigration courts in recent weeks, a practice which, according to criticism, discourages immigrants to participate in the judicial system.
Democratic legislators expressed their indignation last week when the Senator of California Alex Padilla was handcuffed after trying to interrupt a press conference by the Secretary of the Ministry of Internal Security, Kristi Noem, in the midst of demonstrations against immigration raids in Los Angeles, during which Trump also threatened to arrest the governor of California Gavin Newsom.
Other candidates for the town hall have joined the teams of Lander, the member of the assembly of New York State, Zohran Mamdani, calling for the arrest of an ice trend “terrorizing people across the country” and the former governor of the state Andrew Cuomo calling him “Duvile” by the Trump administration.
In a video of the arrest of Lander, he seemed to try to hold his arms with the accused before the agents – some carry masks for the face – physically separate the two and handle the controller. Lander can be heard several times requesting a judicial mandate, which is required for immigration arrests in certain circumstances. An officer has a newspaper saying that it is a mandate, although he does not pass it.
After missing the landing, federal agents can be heard telling the controller that he “obstructing” because he tells them that they “do not have the power to stop American citizens”.
“They said:” You are clogging, “said Lander’s wife, Meg Barnette, at a press conference shortly after the incident. “I was pushed away.”
“What I saw was shocking and unacceptable,” added Barnette, who is a lawyer. “What I saw today was not the rule of law.”
The American Ministry of Internal Security told CBS News that the Lander had been arrested “by attacking the police and hampering a federal officer” and accused him of having undergone public security to “obtain a viral moment”.
