The safety of New Orleans, Tyrann Mathieu, announced his retirement from professional football.
Mathieu retires after three seasons with the saints, during which he did not miss a single regular season match.
His decision to move away from football is a surprise, since he participated in the team’s veteran minicamp during the offseason.
“While I hang up my crampons, I am filled with gratitude while I close this chapter of my life and I officially get away from the game that shaped me in all ways,” wrote Mathieu on social networks.
“From my first snap to the university to my last game in the NFL, this trip was nothing less than a blessing. Football gave me a goal, a discipline and memories that will remain with me forever. But more than anything, it gave me a community.
“To all the coaches who believed in me, all the teammates who fought next to me, and all the fan who presented themselves, applauded and rolled with me through the ups and downs, thank you. You gave me strength when I needed the most, and your love carried me further than I would never have imagined.
“I hope I made you proud. It’s not goodbye – it’s just the next chapter.”
Mathieu played his first five seasons with Arizona before signing with Houston as a free agent. He then signed with the Chiefs in 2019, helping to propel the club to a Super Bowl victory against the 49ers as the first All-Pro team. He was again an All-Pro in 2020 because the chiefs won a second consecutive title from the AFC.
Mathieu returned to Louisiana in 2022, signing with the saints in a free agency. He started the 17 games for New Orleans in the last three seasons, recording 10 interceptions and 24 passes for the franchise.
In all, Mathieu appeared in 180 career games with 171 departures. He finished as three times All-Pro and a triple professional quarter with 36 interceptions, 100 defensive passes, seven forced escapes, eight escaped recovery and 11.0 bags.
