The wait is that anyone occupies the role would be the precursor to succeed President Mahmoud Abbas, 89.
The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) announced the creation of a vice-president of under 89, Mahmoud Abbas, who did not specify a successor.
After a two-day meeting, the organization’s central council voted on Thursday to create the role of vice-president of the OLP executive committee. This position would also be called vice-president of the state of Palestine, who, according to the Palestinians, will one day receive complete international recognition.
The wait is that anyone occupies this role would be the precursor to succeed Abbas, although it is not clear when or exactly how it would be filled. Abbas must choose his vice-president from the other 15 members of the OLP executive committee.
The PLO is the internationally recognized representative of the Palestinian people and oversees the Palestinian authority supported by the West (PA), which exerts limited autonomy in certain regions of the West Bank occupied by Israeli. Abbas has directed the two entities for 20 years.
Hamas, which won the last national elections in 2006, is not in the PLO. Hamas took control of Gaza from the AP security forces in 2007, and attempts to reconcile the competitors have failed several times.
In recent years, polls have shown support for him and his Fatah party.
The countries of Western and Arab donors have required AP reforms to play a role in post-war Gaza. Authority is deeply unpopular and faces long -standing corruption allegations and poor governance. The appointment of an apparent heir could aim to appease his criticism.
Hamas criticized Abbas on Thursday for Comments he made One day earlier, where he described the group as “dog sons” and urged him to release Israeli captives and go to bed.
“Abbas puts several times and with suspect in blame the crimes of the occupation and its continuous aggression on our people,” said the senior Hamas official Naim.
Since the War of Israel against Gaza resumed on March 18, at least 1,928 people were killed there, bringing the total number of deaths since the war broke out in October 2023 to at least 51,305, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.
Abbas has sought greater relevance and a role in post-war planning for the Gaza Strip after being widely sidelined.
Talks on a new ceasefire seem to have made little progress, and a delegation from Hamas is in Cairo for negotiations renewed with the main Egyptian and Qatari mediators.
