The death of a patient was linked to a cyber attack on the NHS Last year.
Cybercriminals have attacked two main NHS trusts, resulting in more than 1,000 delays in cancer treatment, 2,000 ambulatory appointments to cancel and more than 1,000 operations postponed.
Said King’s College Hospital Foundation NHS Foundation Trust on Wednesday; A patient died during cyber attack Following a long waiting time for the results of blood tests.
“A patient was unfortunately deceased unexpectedly during the cyber attack. As is standard practice when this happens, we have undertaken a detailed examination of their care,” the trust said in a press release.
“The patient safety incident survey has identified a number of contributory factors that led to the patient’s death.
“This included a long wait for a blood test result due to the cyber attack which has an impact on the pathology services at the time.
“We met the patient’s family and shared the results of the safety survey with them.”
Synnovis, which offers a range of pathology services, including diagnoses, tests and a digital pathology in southeast London, was the victim of the attack on ransomware, which was carried out by the Russian group Qilin.
The Guy’s and St Thomas, King’s College and Lewisham and Greenwich hospitals were all touched by the attack on June 3 of last year. Primary care out of six boroughs and two mental health trust were also affected.
Without this pathology service, NHS trustees in the region could not do work involving transfusions or blood correspondence. Instead, they had to use type O blood for everyone – the universal blood group.
However, this then led to a national shortage of type O blood supplies, explained the NHS in England.
Sensitive data stolen from an NHS supplier in the cyber attack would have been published online.
According to the BBC, the Cyber Criminal group shared nearly 400 GB of data – including patient names, birth dates, NHS numbers and blood test descriptions – on its Darknet site and its telegram channel.
Calculation sheets containing financial arrangements between hospitals and GP and Synnovis services have also been published.
