The boss of Lionesses Sarina Wiegman had her say on several recent examples of poor quality game surfaces in front of the double-head of England against Belgium next month, which again raised the question of standards in the female game.
The 2-0 defeat of the Arsenal Champions League at Real Madrid last week took place on an area of the rain which was described as “shame” of the former Arsenal striker Ian Wright.
The game took place at the Alfredo Di Stefano stadium, the 6,000 -seat house in Real’s Reserves, despite the fact that the Bernabeu was available during the international male break.
He was also criticized by head coach of the Gunners, Renee Slegers, before the return leg on Wednesday. Referring to the difference between the Emirates of Arsenal stadium and the DI Stefano, she said: “Of course, it will be easier on a golf course than on the rocks.
“But we have to face all the circumstances and if the rules of the competition say that this land is clear to play, then we have to play on it. We love the right throws, of course. I think any team does.”
There have also been criticisms of the play surface of Derby’s Pride Park, the place of the centerpiece of the female League Cup last week between Chelsea and Manchester City, that the midfielder of Blues Erin Cuthbert called “unfit for a final”.
Speaking of the problem, Wiegman said: “It’s really disappointing. You hope they would play (Champions League matches) in Bernabeu.
“You want better fields. It is also a little dangerous. We must continue to work on these things, players deserve to show their performance at the highest level and to withdraw the risk of injury.”
England began its group A3 games in February with a 1-1 draw in Portugal before beating Spain 1-0 in Wembley.
The lionesses confront Belgium in Ashton Gate on April 4, then to Luven four days later.
Wiegman says that the result on the world champions in Spain will bring more confidence in the team before the matches against Belgium.
She added: “I think a lot of confidence, we have shown that we are always a high -level team. We had a little disappointment against Portugal, but I think tactically, they did a few things very well and we had to adapt to this.
“It was a different match. Between these matches, we had some team meetings and conversations and you could see and feel on the field that we fought for this victory (against Spain).
“We knew that it was a very competitive match because Spain is the world champions, which brings confidence to the team.
“Belgium will give us different challenges and we have to adapt again. It will be two difficult games, but we can’t wait to meet the team again.”
The April camp is the penultimate chance for Wiegman to assess his players before choosing his team for the euros of this summer in Switzerland, where England will seek to defend their title.
