Lando Norris preceded the teammate Oscar Piastri while McLaren dominated the final training at the Saudi Grand Prix.
Norris delivered a time of 1: 27.489 to improve Piastri by 0.024 on the Jeddah Corniche circuit, with a difference of six tenth to George Russell de Mercedes in third, suggesting that a All-McLaren competition for pole is in store by qualifying later.
Piastri had actually appeared faster from the McLarens throughout the session, but had made a mistake on his last attempt at a flying tower, while Norris improved to move towards the top of the time sheet.
Norris leads Piastri by three points to the top of the world championship, but has played inconsistently since his opening victory in Australia, and admitted on Thursday that he had to change his driving style to adapt to the characteristics of McLaren’s 2025 car.
The reigning world champion Max Verstappen finished fourth for Red Bull, slightly improving Charles Leclerc de Ferrari.
The difficulties of Lewis Hamilton in Ferrari continued when he finished 12th, more than a second back of the McLarens, and four tenths of his teammate.
Williams continued to appear the biggest threat to the best teams, Alex Albon taking sixth in front of his teammate Carlos Sainz.
Yuki Tsunoda was ninth in the other Red Bull after missing the opening stages of the session while the team finished the repairs of his car after his accident in the last training session stadiums on Friday.
While McLaren’s demonstration was disturbing for the rest of the field, their ability to extract advanced performance in hot conditions means that their rivals will retain the hope of filling space in the coolest qualification conditions under the lights.
Despite this hope, it will probably take something very special to prevent McLaren from claiming what would be a fourth pole in five qualification sessions this season.
Sky Sports F1 Karun Chandhok said: “I think McLaren has either raised the engines or withdrawn from the car fuel.
“I strongly suspect that we will not see such a big gap between Russell, Verstappen and the McLarens when we can qualify. We saw the same thing in Bahrain.
“McLaren has the impression of wanting to operate more FP3 performance, perhaps the pilots practiced a little more.
