Scottish coach Steve Clarke has appointed former player Steven Naismith as assistant before the opening of the World Cup opening next month.
Naismith, who played under Clarke when he made 51 appearances for the national team, was without work since his Limot as a head coach of Hearts last year.
The old Rangers, Kilmarnock, Hearts, Everton and Norwich Striker had already been part of the configuration of Clarke and now replace John Carver who left earlier this year after being appointed Lechia Gdansk Boss.
Clarke also added the coach of the Leicester City play, Andrew Hughes, before the double-head in Denmark and Belarus in early September.
“I am delighted to have Steven and Andrew with us for the World Cup qualification campaign,” said Clarke. “Steven has already been with us and brings a real complementary competence to myself and Alan Irvine.
“He had the opportunity to go back to full -time club football, so that said a lot for his pride in the national team he agreed to join us again. I was really impressed by a certain number of potential candidates to whom we had spoken when John left to continue at Lechia Gdansk, but the fact that we worked together before making a seamless transition.
“I am also very happy to have Andrew with us. He has led to a variety of roles since his retirement to play, but has excelled as a moving coach at Norwich City and now Leicester City and I am grateful to Marti Cifuentes to have allowed Andrew to work with us during the international windows.”
Naismith added: “I am really delighted to join the coaches of coaches of the national male team of Scotland under Steve. When I left Hearts, I wanted not to jump directly in the first offer but to think about my experiences as a coach and wait for something that really excited me.
“When I spoke to Steve for the first time about the possibility of coming back, it was obvious: I loved playing for my country, I loved being part of the team of coaches before and I can’t wait to help support the mission of bringing Scotland back to a World Cup again.”
Hughes said: “From the moment I received Steve’s call, I felt extremely honored to be invited to work with the male national team of Scotland.
“My father is Scottish and as well as it is a moment of pride for me and my family, it is an extremely exciting period as a coach to be part of a World Cup qualification campaign, with such a talented team, after consecutive qualifications of Euro. I can’t wait to start.”
