Should weight loss drugs like Mounjaro be widely available on the NHS? Vote in our poll

A major expansion of the weight loss treatment of the NHS begins today, while GPS across England are now able to prescribe Mounjaro – an injectable drug also known as shooting – for the first time.

Once limited to specialized clinics or private prescriptions, Mounjaro will now be accessible thanks to a general practice for people with severe obesity, in particular those with a BMI over 40 years and at least four related health problems, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease or sleep apnea.

This decision is part of a wider deployment aimed at reaching around 220,000 people in the next three years.

Supporters consider it a breakthrough in the fight against obesity diseases and the softening of long -term pressure on the NHS. But others, including the main general practitioners and pharmacy experts, have warned of the potential drawbacks – the increase in workload and training for drug fears that will be considered a rapid solution without support for the appropriate lifestyle.

“There is no miracle solution,” said Professor Kamila Hawthorne, president of the Royal College of GPS. “We must also see the emphasis on prevention, preventing people from being overweight in the first place so that they do not need a medical intervention later,” she added.
