Michael Atherton and Nasser Hussain distinguished the Hampshire Sonny Baker bowler as a late competitor to be included in the Ashs team in England to face Australia this winter.
The 22 -year -old man raised his profile with an impressive opening spell for Manchester Originals in The Hundred on Monday while he disturbed London Spirit’s opening couple at a high level of David Warner and Kane Williamson.
Baker received a central development contract by England in February after impressive during his first class beginnings during a Lions England tour in Australia at the start of the year.
Having moved to Hampshire since Somerset before the season of the County 2025 County Championships, Baker took 19 windows with an average of 36.1 in six appearances in the championship.
Speaking on the last episode of Podcast Sky Sports CricketThe former captain of England, Atherton, said: “We both liked to watch Sonny Baker the other evening at Old Trafford.
“He gave David Warner in a hurry. It is in itself a good sign.
“He is quite alive and skidding and lively, and I know that they were very impressed by him in the lions who went down to Australia last year, so he could be a bit a bolter for winter.”
The former skipper of England Hussain was also impressed by Baker, but wondered if he was physically prepared for the rigors of the test cricket.
Hussain said: “Whoever blew David Warner, when David Warner has that smile smiles at the end of the five, it’s not because he loves you. It was a” Crikey, it was pretty good, to be honest “, smiles and smile (this Warner) gave Sonny Baker.
“It was hostile things. The speed Gun can say 86, 87 miles per hour, but sometimes the quisons feel a little faster. And he seems to feel a little faster.
“My only problem is that I have not seen him enough in the long cricket to know what his third, fourth spell will look like, how will he come back the next day? But as you say, the Lions reports were that he was excellent.”
Atherton and Hussain also discussed the “difficult” situation against the striker of England Jacob Bethell as he seeks to rediscover his form after a difficult spell.
The 21 -year -old spent the summer as a first rescue striker for the test side of England, with a decision made to keep him with the team throughout the series against India rather than freeing him to play the county cricket.
Atherton and Hussain wondered if Bethell should prioritize the county cricket player at the end of English summer to prepare for ashes, rather than playing white ball games for the limited sides of England.
Atherton said: “If you are looking forward to, if it is the spare striker in the ashes, what does England do now?
“You could make an argument that may play 50 on the cricket during this period, but you would obviously want to play the hundred because you are paid and there are big crowds and that’s where it is.
“But after that, should he play in the championship or should he play white ball cricket? Because we have white ball internationals at the end of the season.”
Hussain added: “If I were him, I would probably try to play County Championship cricket for Warwickshire at the end of the season, just to enter the pace.
“And I know there is a T20 World Cup to come and the white ball stuff is extremely important. But it seems to have lost the rhythm of the striker.
“He does not yet have hundreds of professionals. Go get a hundred professionals. I think the Warwickshire also plays Surrey. It will be a very good opportunity against a good attack by bowling.
“It is therefore my personal thought. Rob Key, selectors, they are often criticized so as not to focus on white ball stuff. They can say:” Okay, we have a World Cup, you have to play more white ball stuff. “It will be interesting to see.”
