Streeting launches national investigation after NHS maternity scandals

Secretary of health Wes Street announced the launch of a national survey on NHS maternity services.

The new rapid survey aims to provide the truth to families who suffer damage.

It is also intended to stimulate urgent improvements in care and safety.

Monday’s announcement came after Mr. Streting met families who had lost babies and in the middle of the Current surveys on poor maternity care in certain NHS trustees.

In a statement, Mr. Streting said: “In the past year, I met with bereaved families from all over the country who lost babies or suffered serious damages during what should have been the happiest period of their lives.

“What they experienced is devastating – deeply painful stories of trauma, loss and a lack of basic compassion – caused by failures in NHS maternity care which should never have occurred. Their bravery in speech was clearly: we must act – and we must act now.

“I know that no one wants better for women and babies than the thousands of midwives of the NHS, obstetricians, maternity and neonatal staff, and that the vast majority of births are safe and without incident, but it is clear that something is wrong.

“This is why I ordered a rapid national survey to make sure that these families obtain the truth and responsibility that they deserve, and that no parent or baby is disappointed. I want the staff to come with us on this subject, to improve things for everyone. ”

Streting said the government “also took immediate measures to keep the faulty services to report.”

“Maternity care should be the decisive test by which this government is judged on patient safety, and I will do everything in my power to ensure that no family must suffer again.”

Officials said the survey would examine the entire maternity system, including an urgent examination in the best performing services.

It is planned that the investigation will happen again by the end of the year.

The Ministry of Health and Social Coins (DHSC) said it also launched a “national maternity and neonatal working group”, which will be chaired by Mr. Streting.

Professor Ranee Thakar, president of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, said that too many women and babies do not obtain the maternity care they deserve, with tragic results.

“The maternity workforce is on their knees, many leaving the profession now,” she said.

“It is essential that the national review announced today is carried out quickly, is based on the evidence of previous maternity surveys and produces a final set of recommendations that galvanize the action through the system.”

For years, maternities had too little staff and too little time for training, as well as a lack of modern equipment and facilities, she said.

“The route must include the fiducies offer, in particular the most disputed, the right support and the right tools to provide safe and personalized care, and we urge the government to not lose sight of the funding and the shortages of labor in this regard.”
