The car rates come into force, putting pressure on the prices of the new car

The prices on imported vehicles entered into force on Thursday, a policy which, according to President Trump, stimulates investments and jobs in the United States, but that analysts say will increase the prices of the car from new thousands of dollars.

The law of 25% applies to all cars assembled outside the United States. From May 3, the price will also apply to imported automotive parts, which will add to the cost of cars assembled at the national level as well as to automobile repairs.

There will be a partial exemption for cars manufactured in Mexico or Canada which respect the terms of the free trade agreements with these countries. Motor manufacturers will not have to pay tasks on parts such as engines, transmissions or batteries that have been manufactured in the United States and installed later in cars in Mexican or Canadian factories.

This provision will reduce the impact on vehicles such as the Equinox Equinox electric vehicle, which is assembled in Mexico but includes a battery and other components manufactured in the United States. General Motors will only pay a price on the part of the car made abroad.

At the same time, the duty on the parts will increase the cost of cars made in Michigan, Tennessee, Ohio or other states. Indeed, most cars coming out of American factories contain components made abroad, which often represents more than half of the cost of the vehicle.

According to data, approximately 90% of the value of certain Mercedes-Benz cars manufactured in Alabama, for example, is in the engines and transmissions imported from Europe.

The impact of prices on individual vehicles will vary considerably. Cars like Tesla Model Y, made in Texas and California, or Honda Passport, made of Alabama, have high percentages of parts made in the United States and will pay lower prices.

The prices will be the highest on cars made abroad, such as the Toyota Prius made in Japan or Porsche sports cars made in Germany.

Even people who do not buy new cars will be struck by prices because they will pay more for parts such as tires, brake pads and oil filters.

Michael Holmes, Co-chief of Virginia Tire and Auto, a chain of repair and car maintenance stores, said that he and his suppliers would initially try to absorb most of the increased cost.

“It’s not sustainable,” said Holmes. “It is a magical thought to think that companies will not transmit this.”

Auto prices could also increase the prices of used cars over time, analysts said, increasing the demand for these vehicles as new people become unaffordable for many buyers. Insurance premiums can also increase because repairs will cost more.
