And now we are waiting. Season two of Breakup I just finished, leaving us more answers than what we expected, but also new questions that we have never even succeeded. You can read our complete ventilation here (TK link) but, moreover, we were given A few minutes to talk to the creator of the seriesDan Erickson, with all the spoilers on the table.
Obviously, he was not going to tell us what is going on in season three or beyond – if that happens – but we were able to ask him questions about the end of the season, Some of the biggest questions along the wayAnd even I had a clue on what fans should be seized while waiting for our favorite macrodon refiners to return to Lumon and Apple TV +
Germain Lussier, Io9: Resing Gemma was clearly the big goal this season, but how did you approach telling this story while putting in place the end of this season with Mark choosing Helly?
And Erickson: It was entirely cooked together, to be honest. I thought it would be an interesting challenge to start Mark on this quest. And literally, you know, the first thing you see this season is the doors open and he exhausts and he is looking for Gemma. And he does that not because he loves him, but because he knows that his outing loves him. And in a way, I think he feels responsible. The development of his character during the season reached a point where he values his own life and his own love and his own priorities at a level equal to that of his accuracy. He had come to feel that he was himself a human and deserved the things he wanted. And that is why in this (final) moment, you know, he looks at Gemma and I think it would be easier for him if he felt love for her, but he does not do. And the person he loves is behind him, that’s where he’s going.
IO9: The final answers many big questions – the goats, Cold Harbor, the figures. How did you decide what you wanted to answer this season, what you could remember, and did it hesitate to give us these answers this season?
Erickson: Of course. I mean, the right thing about the show is that we have always built it where there were a kind of questions in questions. We now have a little sense, as, what are the figures on the screen, what they do, where is Mark’s wife, etc. But you can answer these questions directly, but still not to the “why?” A kind of big, scary, “what’s going on in this program?” And so we really tried to structure it in a way where you make your way out of this box from the inside, and you do not know which box you were until you have come out.
Io9: By triggering this, is there more about the question of why Mark and Gemma were chosen for Cold Harbor? Because we get a few clues in “Chikhai Bardo”, but I’m just curious to know if this story is over, or if there is something, there is more.
Erickson: I think this is something we will have to wait and see.
Io9: Okay. “Holy’s Hollow”, for me, in a strange season is always the strangest episode. I loved it. But is all this-where are the sosies, the stuff of the Kier family-is a crucial part of the story in the future, or is it just something fun and strange with which you like to play?
Erickson: I can’t really say (but) here’s what I’m going to say. I think sometimes people ask almost accusing. Is it like: “Is there really a point for that?” Or: “You are just weird to be weird.” And you didn’t ask for this tone.
Io9: Well, a little.
Erickson: My feeling is always like me, as a spectator, I like it Mad movies. And part of this is because of the construction of the world. There are these entire systems, groups and cultures that we can hardly see, and all that it does is to build the world. Everything he does is to ask us about: “Why does this world work as it does?” So there are certain things in the series that are like that and that we will never explore intentionally because it is fun to have questions. But I also completely understand people who want answers, especially the questions we have pointed out specifically, where we say: “Hey, look at that”. For me, if we point something and say, “Look at this”, and then we do not explain it, it’s on us.
Io9: fairly fair. With Holy’s Hollow as well as the neck of Salt, season two began to show the world outside Kier. Does showing more from the outside world take into account where you see the story unfolding?
Erickson: Yeah, I think yes. I think we had seen a little before. We saw Ganz College in the first season. But the spectacle has a kind of strange relationship with the outside world. We have never intentionally gone to a real place. When you are in Lumon, there is this feeling of being out of time and space and disoriented. This genre extends a little to the outside world. It is intentional that we do not know exactly where we are. But we wanted to build this feeling that there is a bigger world at stake here and that we are part of something bigger.
Io9: Yes, they have iPhones, but they do not have more recent cars than 1980. Very interesting. Something else I continued to grasp this season is Mark’s cough. Is it a side effect of reintegration or is there any more?
Erickson: (Break) HMM. You could get a different answer from someone else.
Io9: Okay.
Erickson: For me, it is a side effect of reintegration. It is sort of how I see it.
Io9: Very good. It is clear here … Well, not “clear”, but a little more “clearer”, that this lol was a little focused on Cold Harbor, Mark and Gemma. Do all MDR departments do the same thing, or intend to explain a little more about what MDR generally means?
Erickson: I cannot enter it too much. We see that the other of other branches, they know how to do it. But I think there is a question, even in our MDR with the four refiners, we do not know who the others refine, if someone. And I think it’s always a question.
Io9: Without a doubt. Now I loved Mr. Milchick to return to Drummond in “The After Hours”. So fun. But he seemed to forget him the next day with all his dance. Was this suspicion of challenge to know where you see the character?
Erickson: Yeah, that is. I think Milchick is someone who always cares about work and cares about work and believes in what they do. And I think he wants to seriously bring a minimum of joy and humanity to the life of the inches, which is in a way what he tried to do the whole season to various degrees of success. But he is also very tired of people directly above him, and the way they treat him and the way they appreciate or valorize him. Sometimes, when we are in a systemally harmful or systematically toxic place, we are sometimes somehow trained to put our anger on the people closest to us, instead of taking a step back and saying: “Hey, is all this system bad? Does all this system hurts me and hurts others? ” So I think that it is a very human reaction which, you know, not without reservation, but he directs this vitriol to Mr. Drummond as opposed to the largest company.
Io9: whatever the big company. We always know the board of directors, a lot. Very well, this is unfortunately my last question, and you probably can’t even answer it, but I hope we get a three season. Not yet official. But if and when we do it, what is the biggest question that fans should think about entering more Breakup?
Erickson: I think the question about Mark and Helly’s mind will be just “now what?” I think they have chosen to continue living, and I think they don’t know what it means exactly, how long they have, if it is something where they will be able to exist for two more minutes or 10 years? And it is therefore the question of what would you do to preserve your own existence? Now that you see yourself as an individual, you have started to know who you are, what would you do to defend this?
Io9: I love it, and I have a billion additional questions, but it’s my time. Thank you very much for the show and for talking to us today. I can’t wait to talk to you about season three.
