A man was in prison on Sunday after he was alleged that he had taken a vehicle to a post office in San Jose, California early in the morning, triggering a fire that damaged the location, the police said.
No injury was reported in the 2:30 a.m. fire, but the fire damaged the post office building, in particular the front part where the vehicle entered, said the San Jose fire battalion, Josh Staley.
The fire was overturned 90 minutes after its report, he said, but not before it most likely burns the mail. Staley described it as a fire with two alarms that attracted three city’s fire battalions.
The vehicle and the collision have apparently triggered the fire, said Staley. The driver was then identified as Richard Tillman, 44, from San Jose, according to the San Jose police.
He was imprisoned on the basis of an allegation of criminal fire and was detained Sunday afternoon, according to police and prison files. He owed the court on Wednesday.
The video showed the vehicle with its back in the structure.
Although the investigators think that the collision was deliberate, the reason was unknown and was still the subject of an investigation, the police said in a statement.
The American postal inspection service is the main agency investigating the incident, the San Jose police announced. He did not immediately respond to a request to request more information.
