State Man produced a dominant leading screen to win his third Hurdle Champion of Boodles in Punhetown, where Constitution Hill turned out to be a huge disappointment by finishing a fifth well defeated.
Despite a second successive fall in the Hurdle d’Aintree, Constitution Hill was a favorite of 8-13 strongly sustained to resume the path winning during his first trip to Ireland, but he was a force spent before the Home turn and quickly weakened out of driving.
On the other hand, State Man (9-4) – which sought to have a second champion obstacle in Cheltenham at his mercy when he crashed at the last obstacle to Prestbury Park in mid -March – continued to pour it in front of the AS of Paul Townend and returned home with four and three quarters of length in hand Golden Ace.
Willie Mullins said: “This is the performance we have always thought of in him. In all honesty to Constitution Hill, I don’t think he arrived during the day. It is very difficult to travel from England after having two falls and that things did not go well for him.
“Our guy ran his real race and that was a constant thing in his racing life, he always presents himself and runs his race. It was a huge performance.
“It is just very authentic without ever being flashy. I think the cheeks have made it a little more flashy than before. It is a lazy horse and cheeks that help it.
“Paul has been categorical about this horse in recent years, people have continued about Lossiemouth and the State – he has always thought of the statesman every day of the week and it has been proven.
“I think we were all waiting for this competition and he delivered. We are just delighted.”
