An emotional Hollie paid tribute to her longtime ally Trueshan, after Flat Racing lost one of his lasting stars in Goodwood on Tuesday when the extremely popular stay suffered a deadly injury.
Doyle was rolling nine years from Alan King for the fourth time of the Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup, having won it in 2021, with the gelding participating in the 35th outing of a stellar career, but was forced strongly halfway.
Remembering some of their great days together, which won 11 victories, including three successive triumphs in the long distance of the distance to Ascot the British Champions Day, Doyle told the AP news agency: “I am just devastated. It could not be worse. It was a special and special horse, I cannot think of anything else to say.
“I am emptied. He was incredible for me, a star, and these memories we have together are among my best.”
A winner of 16 times – three of them coming to the group one – Trueshan had attracted an audience which is unusual for a flat horse because of its longevity.
In 2022, he fell into Handicap Company to challenge one of the highest brands in recent times during the victory of the Northumberland plaque in Newcastle.
James Give, the director of the equine well-being of the British Horseracing Authority, told ITV Racing: “I want to express my sincere condolences to all the connections and to any person associated with the horse, nobody will feel it more than them.
“He was faithful, he was a firm friend, he was everything for them
“What happened unfortunately, it was only an accident, halfway through, in a straight line that rises a hill. His left pastry broke and left it in a situation that was not recoverable.
“Alan was able to arrive there and assess him with the veterinarian and they estimated that there was not really an option to lower it.”
