The American president said that the Treasury Secretary wanted to remain in his current role.
US President Donald Trump has excluded the secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent as his choice to replace the president of the Federal Reserve Jerome Powell.
Trump, who repeatedly criticized Powell for not having evolved faster to reduce interest rates, said on Tuesday that Bessent wanted to continue his current role.
“I love Scott, but he wants to stay where he is,” said Trump in an interview with CNBC, adding that Bessent was doing a “excellent job” and told him as recently as on Monday that he did not want the position.
Trump said he had four candidates in mind to replace Powell, whose mandate expires in May, notably Kevin Warsh, who previously sat on the Council of Seven Fed members, and Kevin Hassett, director of the National Economic Council of the White House.
He said he could take the opportunity to replace Adriana D Kugler, who announced his anticipated resignation last week as one of the seven governors, to put his choice for chair in the board of directors before the departure of Powell.
“I’m going to make the decision soon,” said Trump.
Trump’s repeated attacks on Powell, which he nicknamed “too late”, have worked concerns about the American Central Bank which maintains its independence, which investors consider crucial to the health of the American economy.
Following information last month, Trump had asked Republican legislators if he were to dismiss the president of the Fed, the reference S&P 500 tumbled 0.7%.
American actions quickly recovered after Trump denied having the intention of withdrawing Powell early.
Under the legislation and precedent of the United States Supreme Court, the president can only withdraw the president of the Fed that “for good reason”, largely interpreted as proof of corruption or embezzlement.
