The officials said that the crews responded to a fire at Canfield Mountain in the city around 1:22 p.m. (8:22 p.m. GMT), and shots were reported about half an hour later at 2 p.m. (9:00 p.m. GMT).

Two firefighters were killed and, according to the authorities, a third came out of the surgery and is in a stable state but “fighting for his life”.
Norris told journalists on Sunday that the authorities think that the suspect had intentionally triggered the fire as “an ambush”.
“We think he started and it was completely intentional what he did,” he added.
However, civil servants did not say any possible reason for the reasons why the suspect could have wanted to stretch an ambush to the firefighters.

The video sequences of the region have shown that smoke rising from wooded hills, with several ambulances and emergency vehicles seen in a local hospital.
Several heroic firefighters were attacked today as they responded to a fire in northern Idaho. This is a odious direct assault on our brave firefighters. I ask all the Idahoans to pray for them and their families while we are waiting to find out more. Teresa and I have a broken heart.

The Canfield Mountain region is on the eastern periphery of Alene’s heart. It is a popular natural space of 24 acres (10 hectares) with hiking and mountain trails.
Heart of Alene, a city of around 55,000 inhabitants, is located around 260 miles (420 km) east of Seattle.
The mountain is densely covered with thick trees and brush, and its network of trails extends into a national forest.
Based on preliminary evidence, the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Bureau thinks that there was only one shooter involved in the attack. Initially, the authorities had suspected that there could be up to four.
The authorities locate the suspect after detecting the activity of mobile phones in the area and retraced the signal.
There, they discovered a man who seemed to have died with a weapon found nearby. They did not say how the man died, nor what a firearm was discovered. Norris said the authorities believe that the dead man was the shooter. However, the police have not yet revealed their identity.
Police said that a man called 911 to report the fire, but said he was not clear if the appellant was the shooter.
