London – Ukraine and its allies on Sunday Sunday to answer President Donald Trump’s apparent change to Vladimir Putin’s hard position After their Alaska summit.
European leaders announced that they would join the Voludymyr Zelenskyy from Ukraine in Washington on Monday while they were looking to sail on the new American approach to end the war after Trump pointed out that he reversed his insistence on a cease-fire and rather pursued a permanent peace agreement-apparently aligning the United States with the Kremlin.
Trump seemed to respond to the information on Sunday that he could also support Putin’s requests for Ukraine to give up his region in eastern Donbas, another alarm among kyiv and his European donors.
“If I had Russia to abandon Moscow in the context of the agreement, the false news, and their partner, the radical democrats who had to say that I made a terrible mistake and a very bad deal,” he posted on Truth Social.
While Ukraine and Europe determine the best way to move forward, a multitude of leaders on the continent have announced that they would join Zelenskyy in Washington. They may hope to make sure that there is no repetition of his Last meeting of the oval officeAnd to prevent Zelenskyy from standing alone to deal with any pressure to access Putin’s requests.
The offices of NATO secretary general, Mark Rutte, of the president of the European Commission Ursula von of Leyen, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Finnish President Alexander Stubb and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz declared that they would go to Washington on Monday to meet Trump. They will be joined by French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, according to Reuters.
“”The journey will serve as an exchange of information “with Trump, said the Merz office.” The talks will tackle, among other things, security guarantees, territorial problems and continuous support for Ukraine in its defense against Russian attack. “
Zelenskyy thanked the European Union for his support on Sunday, next to Von de Leyen in Brussels, where he should attend a virtual meeting of the so-called “Coalition of the Will”, which includes more than 30 countries working together to support Ukraine.
“Washington is with us,” he said, while reiterating that a cease-fire was necessary to work on a final agreement.
Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, told NBC News to “meet the press” On Sunday, a temporary ceasefire agreement is “not out of the table”, despite the comments of Trump one day earlier.
Any agreement should include “certain security guarantees for Ukraine,” said Rubio.
Special American envoy Steve Witkoff, on the other hand, said that Putin had agreed in Alaska to allow European allies to offer Ukrainian security guarantees resembling a collective defense mandate in NATO as part of a possible peace agreement.
“We were able to win the following concession: that the United States could offer type 5 protection, which is one of the real reasons why Ukraine wants to be in NATO,” said Witkoff on the “Union State” of CNN.
Witkoff seemed to suggest that Russia also agreed to “grasp legislative” promising “not to go after another territory when the peace agreement is codified”.
Trump seemed to have taken a step towards the wishes of Ukraine and Europe in recent days.
Trump has engaged directly with Zelenskyy and European leaders by telephone early Saturday morning in the United States who participated in a potential NATO security guarantee for Ukraine as part of an agreement with Russia, two senior administration officials and three familiar sources with discussions told NBC News.
“European and American security guarantees have been discussed,” said a familiar source with discussions. “American troops on the ground have not been discussed or entertained by (Trump).”
The security guarantees would be made in the scenario according to which Russia had to start Ukraine again after a potential peace agreement, the sources said. The sources have indicated that these protections, as discussed by the White House, did not include membership of NATO – despite European leaders who declared in a joint statement that Ukraine should have the right to request membership of NATO.
But it was clear that the summit had left Ukraine to feel uncomfortable.
For civilians on the ground, still under Russian attack, even if the diplomatic maneuvers took place, it was not only the substance but the optics of the Alaska talks that caused frustration.
“I was hoping that the United States would not unroll the red carpet to the enemy,” Natalya Lypei, resident of Kyiv said on Saturday. “How can you welcome a tyrant like this?”
