Emma Raducanu “builds something big” while she is preparing for her return to Flushing Meadows – the scene of her biggest triumph.
The British No. 1 shocked the tennis world in 2021 when, at only 18 years old, she stormed American glory.
Instead of embarking on a supported race at the top of sport, the last four years have felt a reset for Raducanu, but a page seems to have been shot in 2025.
Improvement of physical condition, a more stable coaching configuration has produced signs of resilience and growth – suggesting that another performance can be on the horizon, according to Sky Sports Tennis Commentator Jonathan Overend.
“Raducanu won her (the US Open) before, she therefore has these incredible memories of 2021,” said Overend.
“In a way, however, does she want to forget that she has never done that? She builds her career now almost as if she had never had this surprising breakthrough, slowly goes back to her way.
“Last year, she started outside the top 300 in the world; now she is firmly back in the top 50, so she accumulates again to something big. I am not saying that it will happen at the US Open, but it is a good progress of Raducanu this year.”
While Raducanu returns to Flushing Meadows with cautious optimism, his compatriot Brit Jack Draper goes to the United States open in search of a seat at the top table of tennis that only a big slam title can secure.
Draper, who reached the American Open semi-finals in 2024, should come back from a prolonged post-wibledon break during the last Grand Chelem of the year.
“The interesting thing from Draper’s point of view is that he has not played from Wimbledon,” added Overend.
“He has taken leave and builds his schedule very carefully now to make sure that he does not survive or does not hurt his body as he did quite frequently a few years ago.”
Overend thinks that the drawing that draper receives could be crucial, adding: “Many will depend on the draw because if you have not played for a while, you want to make your way in the tournament with a few practical matches in the first two laps.
“He did the semi-finals last year, losing against Jannik Sinner, so he has a lot of classification points to defend. But if he arrives at the middle weekend, he has absolutely a chance to have a good tournament.”
