Venus Williams will return to Grand Chelem tennis at the US Open after an absence of two years, receiving a joker in women’s singles at the age of 45.
The seven time champion of the Grand Chelem – two of these successes coming to Flushing Meadows in 2000 and 2001 – will be the oldest participant in the tournament since Renee Richards at the age of 47 in 1981, according to the International Tennis Federation.
Williams had already received a joker by the US Tennis Association for the mixed double mixed competition next week, with the single tournament from August 24 – live Sky Sports.
She won seven major championships in single – including the US Open in 2000 and 2001 – with 14 others in female double, all won with her younger sister, Serena, plus two in double mixed.
Williams’ younger sister Serena retired with 23 Grand Chelem single trophies after playing the US Open in 2022, while the last appearance of Venus to a slam came to Flushing Meadows in 2023, losing in the first round. She has not won a single match since 2019.
When Williams returned to the tour last month at DC Open in Washington – his first game anywhere in 16 months – a journalist asked if it would be a unique thing or if there were plans for other tournaments.
“I’m just here for the moment, and who knows?” Williams responded at the time. “Maybe there is more, but for the moment, I just focus on this. I haven’t played for a year.
“There is no doubt that I can play tennis, but obviously, returning to play matches, it takes time to enter the swing of things.
“I really think I’m going to play well; I’m still the same player. I’m a big striker, I’m hitting big. It’s my brand.”
Last year, Williams underwent surgery to eliminate uterine fibroids and missed most of the season.
In Washington, she has contributed for the first time since March 2024 to the Miami Open and became the oldest woman to win a single tour match since Martina Navratilova was 47 years old in Wimbledon in 2004. Williams also won a double match at the DC open.
Williams entered the Cincinnati Open via a Joker last week, coming out in the first round of the single tournament.
In New York, she will play in the mixed double tournament from August 19 to 20 with Reilly Opelka, a 27 -year -old American woman who was previously classified in the Top 20.
