A shooter opened fire in a high -rise corporate building in the heart of Manhattan on Monday evening, killing a New York police officer and four other people, officials said.
The alleged shooter acted alone and died of a self-inflicted ball injury, law enforcement officials at NBC News said.
The deadly shots, which were reported for the first time around 6.30 p.m., were treated as an active shooting, causing warning warnings and evacuations, with lines of people seen the building with their hands above their heads.
The motive of the shooter was not disclosed.
Here is what we know so far:
A New York police officer, whose identity has not been made public, said three senior law enforcement officials.
The officer’s family was informed of death.
Four civilians are also dead. Their names have not been published.
Law application officials said violence had been led by a lonely shooter, who died of a self-inflicted ball injury.
The alleged shooter has been identified as Shane Devon Tamura, 27, from Las Vegas, according to four senior law enforcement.
In a photo, three law enforcement officials shared with NBC News, the alleged shooter is seen entering the Midtown Manhattan building wearing dark clothes and sunglasses and wearing what seems to be a large firearm.
A pattern has not been determined.
Caleb Clarke, a former classmate and high school football teammate said Tamura “was the largest goofball in the world, just a ton of energy, a class clown”. The two played together in California until Tamura was transferred from Santa Clarita to Grenada Hills in 2015, just before their senior year.
Clarke has said that in recent years, he and Tamura have only held via social media, where Tamura shared that he was working in a Las Vegas casino. But he doesn’t remember that Clarke was a troublemaker at school. “You would never have thought that violence was something you associate with him. You know, he could make a joke about people, but it’s just typical. Shane was a joker. Everything he said was a joke. He had a ton of energy.”
He added that he seemed that Clarke was intended for grandeur as anhlete. “I have the impression that it was definitely on the table for him,” said Clarke. “I don’t think he was walked to say to himself:” Oh, I will have NFL games one day. I think it was more of everyone by telling him how great he was … how special he was. »»
